Welcome to our website. We are the Shelnutts from Franklin (a small town in west Georgia) My husband is a veterinarian of 10 years and I am a registered nurse of 18 years. We have two children, Noah (13 years old) and Anna (10 years old). They are both very active in sports and they keep us quite busy throughout the year. We enjoy snowskiing, Nascar, and we love the Auburn Tigers!!! War Eagle!!! Ironic, that Ben would be a AU graduate and raise English Bulldogs, but we couldn't get the Tigers tame enough to breed. LOL We raise our animals on twelve acres of rolling countryside where there's plenty of green grass to graze and roll around in and plenty of Georgia red dirt to get muddy in. Our bulldogs have their own "cottage" out back of our house that is heated/air conditioned and has a large fenced area for lounging around in. They are fed the very best of food- Wellness by Old Mother Hubbard and tended to constantly by us. We purchased our first bulldog in 2000 from clients of ours who were bulldog breeders. Ben thought I was crazy when I asked to buy one because as any vet knows, they can be a nightmare to take care of. At least that was his impression until he started raising his own. If you start out right by purchasing a quality bred bulldog and by providing the animal with quality nutrition, you will find that they actually require minimal intervention otherwise. Now don't get me wrong, they do require weekly baths and attention to their rolls and folds but you've got to take the good with the bad. After all, those rolls and folds are what makes them so adorable. They can have numerous cosmetic issues that go along with the breed such as cherry eye, elongated soft palates, and umbilical hernias, but these are all fairly minor and can by dealt with by most veterinarians. We recommend a minimal of four distemper and parvo boosters along with rabies and heartworm protection. A little preventative care goes a long way in the bulldog world. Make sure that you seek out a veterinarian who is familiar with the breed as they don't handle anesthesia well. It is a must that these dogs be keep in a nice neutral environment ( around 70 degrees) at all times, which means they must be inside dogs. They DO NOT tolerate extreme temperatures!!! Many bulldogs are extremely loud snorers and have serious GAS! The personality of a bulldog is the most enjoyable quality in my opinion. They range anywhere from couch potato to raging bulls. The energy level only remains high for a few minutes on those raging bulls though. Then they're ready to pass out for a few hours of sleep. They don't require a lot of exercise and make very good apartment companions. They do require a lot of obedience training from a very young age to make them the best pet they can be for your family. They tend to be rude sometimes and have to be reminded of their manners. Please study up on the breed before you make a hasty decision to buy one of these lovely creatures. Knowledge is key to raising this breed. Enjoy our website and if you have any questions about our animals or bulldogs in general, please feel free to call or email. The Shelnutts 2008
